The two mighty kings

Story:

The Monkey King run into King Kong on his new journey to the west. He heads to west alright, but this time perhaps a bit too west.

Kong, the king of the jungle roars at the little one who stands in front of him,and raises his giant iron fist. He is about to smash whatever or whoever is in his way.

The monkey gazes into the flaming eyes of the massive black. Alertly he waits for the beast to make its move.

A battle of the two mighty kings is about to start.

Background

This work was created for CGchallenge-steampunk legends&myths. It took me roughly a month and half to complete.

I wanted to create an image, where two legendary characters from two different cultures face each other: The monkey king from the famous Chinese legend, and King Kong from the west. I wanted to create as much contrast as possible, such as size, weight, color, light, as well as culture difference.

These two characters are both king in their world. Both mighty, yet in different ways. One is massive, heavy, brutal, and powerful. The other is small, light, quick, and intelligent. I have no intention to foreseen the result of the fight. I only wish the viewers enjoy the tension between the two, who stand on the edge of a battle.

you can visit the work in progress thread for more details at
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=278&t=695908

Special thank goes to Joel Dos Reis Viegas and Carolyn Laplante, who gave me great help on lighting and coloring. As well as Donglu Yu, who gave me huge support everyday during the challenge and never fail to believe in me.

“Can we just go home? There’s nothing here, only sand and rocks and…sand and rocks and…”

“Shush! Just follow up. I can smell them… Come on, come on little human, come out and play!”

“It’s getting late and my favorite show is about to start… Let’s go home… I don’t want to miss my favorite show…”

“WOULD YOU CUT IT?! Stupid fool! Because of you, we have never caught a human! Don’t you get it ?! If we can catch a human, just ONE, we will be rich! And then you can buy the whole DVD collection of your show! So be quiet and follow! Wait, do you hear anything?”

“No…”

“Never mind. That way, let’s go!”

(Off screen voice, Tiffany.)

Today’s probably not my best day. When we were passing the Deadwind Valley, two Kun scouts showed up from nowhere. Those dirty bastards invaded our planet, capture the earthlings and sell us to other Patron races as slaves. I pulled Knuckle back behind a pile of rocks before they spot us. Knuckle wanted to take the scouts out. I gave him a sign to halt.

We can take them alright. The uplifted Neo-chimps are extremely fast in action, giving the Kun huge headache in short-range combat. But one of earthling’s secret underground shelters is only a mile away from here. Open fire would attracts more enemies and put the shelter in danger. I can not take that risk.

Hiding in the shadows we wait, silently.

Uplifted Universe is my third CG challenge and surely the most difficult one. Two month duration is pretty tight, specially when you have two jobs, Monday to Friday finish at 10 pm. Special thank goes to Donglu Yu, Who kept me going from day one. You can check the final of her challenge work here .
The Monkey King project started right after the Journey Begins challenge. The monkey king is perhaps the most famous and beloved fictional character in all of classical Chinese literature and the main character in Journey to the West. A magician, priest, ruler, sage, and warrior in the shape of a monkey.

I'm submitting this model to character modeling book2, meanwhile shares the final work with all of you. Comments are most welcome. Thanks.
